A PREMIERE FOR A CHOIR NOT PRESENT, FOR A WORK WITH A LOT OF PRESENCE: “AND THE PEOPLE STAYED HOME”

The song, “And The People Stayed Home” is a result of many people’s efforts, all paying tribute to those who have suffered from the coronavirus.

Kitty O’Meara prepared a text that Javier Busto set to music. She writes and was also a teacher. He composes and was a doctor.

An Art form from those who know how to teach and heal.

The only thing left to do was to give this piece a voice. A lot of voices in fact: an international choir made up of 288 people, who provided separate recordings (each one from their home), and now it is heard as a single choir.

There was a huge response from various choral groups around the world: Batavia Madrigal Singers (Indonesia), The Archipelago Singers (Indonesia), Odawara Childrens & Mulberry Chamber Choir (Japan), Coro Fundación GSD (Spain) or Coro Santa Cecilia (Spain); but also many others sang all the way from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Slovenia, Guatemala, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Taiwan, Venezuela, etc.
The 288 people, united in this virtual choir, sing about what people do and how they get by during the pandemic. The writer Kitty O’Meara spent months suffering alongside those who became ill with the coronavirus. One day she sat down and wrote the entire poem in one go, as the story of what we can do day by day in the face of this situation, to heal the world.

For his part, to Javier Busto the phrases resonate with the simplicity of Don Quixote’s letter to Dulcinea. He prepared a music where the sopranos lead the melody, with long phrases to keep the sense of the text linked, natural and calm, which expresses what so many have experienced.

These ideas reached the hundreds of people who wanted to sing “And the people stayed home”. All of them were enthusiastic, putting in the best of their art form to achieve the sum of the whole has a multiplied magic, greater than the sum of its parts.

Thanks for this result to all the singers, to Javier Busto, Kitty O’Meara, Elena González Correcher (Cantate Mundi) and Enrique Izquierdo Rodríguez.

Singerhood is proud to promote initiatives like this: music and technology that remove limitations.

AND THE PEOPLE STAYED HOME

THE POEM

And the people stayed home,

and read books, and listened and rested,

and exercised, and made art, and played games,

and learned new ways of being, and were still,

and listened more deeply.

Some meditated, some prayed, some danced, some met their shadows,

and the people began to think differently.

And the people healed, and in the absence of people living in ignorant,

dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed,

and the people joined together again,

they grieved their losses, and made new choices,

and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live

and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.
